The Blessed Mother, The Theotokos (Greek for “The God Bearer”) has been venerated for centuries under different titles, different looks, even different colors but devotion to her remains rooted in Tradition and Consonant with Scripture. What the Blessed Mother spoke to the faithful in the past rings down the centuries with the same message: “Pray for sinners, turn from evil and do good, love one another and listen to my Son!”
Our Lady of Good Counsel (in Latin: Mater Boni Consilii) has been associated with the Augustinian Friars for centuries. The image we know today, showing the Virgin with the infant Christ holding on to her with his arms around her neck, is said to have miraculously appeared in the 15th century. The image now enjoys global veneration and the original remains in the custody of the Augustinian friars in Rome.
It was in front of the icon that an eminent Augustinian scholar, missionary and former Prior General of the order the day after his election as Pope Leo XIV in 2025.
A reproduction of the icon of Our Lady of Good Counsel was commissioned with iconographer Joseph Malham of Trinity Icons and presented to His Holiness, Pope Leo XIV in August, 2026. A signed copy of the exact icon, printed on stretchd canvas and hand signed by Joseph Malham, is now available from Trinity Icons.

Though a canvas reproduction, the image remains an icon: a vehicle of prayer and object of meditation, reflection and outward sign of God’s presence among us through the tender and loving gaze of Our Lady of Good Counsel.
