August 15th
The Dormition, or Falling Asleep, of the Theotokos commemorates the death of the Virgin in the home of St. John the Evangelist, to whom she was given by Jesus from the Cross. For centuries it was believed the Virgin and St. John lived in Ephesus but contemporary biblical scholarship points to Jerusalem.
The Theotokos, lying in the sleep of death on a bier, is surrounded by the grieving apostles as well as the holy women and early bishops of the Church. Dominating this public mourning is the intimate moment of Jesus, enclosed within a mandorla with angels, coming to personally take his mother’s soul with him into eternal glory.
The Dormition of the Theotokos is known in the Western churches as The Assumption and is likewise celebrated on August 15th.
