The Baptism of Christ is one of the Three Great Epiphanies or Revelations of the Lord and his divine majesty. The other two are the Worship of the Magi and the Wedding at Cana.
Here, Jesus is shown in a loincloth standing in the Jordan River being baptized by the Great Forerunner, John. Jesus is not immersed in the water as hovering above it like the Spirit of God over the earth, symbolizing Jesus remaking the earth and filling everything with the glory of His being. The axe laid to the root of the tree at the feet of the Baptist symbolizes the New Order and the end of the old pagan one.
On the other side of the shore, angels wait to dry Jesus off as he emerges from the depths of the river. Above, the mystical symbol of the Godhead sends down the Spirit in the form of a small dove while God declares “This is my beloved Son.”
